I’m going to be in Austin next week for South by Southwest (the nerdy portion), and was want tocheck out the local brewing scene. Any pointers from current or former Texans or experienced tourists? I am looking for Texas-brewed beers I can’t get here (hence the Shiner DQ), with excellent barbecue on the side. The comment boards are open!

I love Shiner. It’s my go-to “supermarket” beer, and is really good for simmering brats in.
Can’t help with microbreweries (wish I could), but I drove over 2300 miles to go eat at Kreutz Market, Smitty’s Market and Black’s BBQ in Lockhart, TX. You owe it to yourself to make the 30 minute drive to go have the best BBQ I’ve ever eaten. I wrote about the trip here, and my favorite of the three, Kreutz, here.

I’ve never been there, but here is an Austin Beer Map. Hopefully you can find a use for it!

Also, if any of you beer bloggers out there are going to be in Austin, let me know – I’d love to get together for a beer or four.
Thanks for the link, beerinator … I might have to check that Kreutz place out, William. Thanks guys!

Liveoak Brewing in Austin is a pretty solid place. Their Hefeweizen is excellent. Real Ale Brewing in Blanco also makes some tasty brews, my favorite is their Shade Grown Coffee Porter. There’s also Rahr’s brewed in Fort Worth, which I’ve never had, but I hear decent things.

Try The Salt Lick out in Driftwood (few miles south of Austin out US290), great chicken and sausage, and the german slaw and potato salad is incredible…and it’s BYOBeer – they don’t sell it , you have to bring it. Whole Foods at 6th and Lamar downtown has a pretty good selection of Texas beers from time to time. Any Rudy’s Country Store around town always has consistently well smoked brisket. And if you do the Lockhart trio, you might as well drive another 45 minutes and check out the Shiner brewery. Enjoy
